Solar Tech Manufacturer Prepares for Growth with ERP System

Prism Solar Technologies Inc., uses IFS Applications
to help match prossess with technology.

By Brad Kenney
April 1, 2008 -- Noted technologist, inventor and author Ray Kurzweil is bullish on the prospects for the global solar power industry, forecasting exponential growth along the same lines as another silicon-based sector -- semiconductors. One well-positioned company, Prism Solar Technologies Inc., manufactures a solar module technology commonly used in a wide range of residential, commercial and industrial solar electric applications. With all signs pointing to a market about to catch fire, Prism needed to be able to react more quickly to changing market demands and implement process controls to accommodate its expanding business "Flexibility, scalability and control are critical issues for us as we project future business growth," explains Prism Solar president Rick Lewandowski.

Adding to the favorable market climate are government initiatives (such as state-based renewable portfolio standards) that are driving an ever-expanding market for solar and wind power solutions across the country and teh world. To help capture and manage their part of this global growth, company officers at Prism Solar chose to implement an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system -- IFS Applications -- at its Lake Katrine, N.Y., manufacturing location. The implementation was carried out by a third-party -- Corning Data Services -- which helped Prism Solar with its application selection process, and will be on hand to further assist the company match processes and technology. Prism Solar will implement a product suite of mixed-mode manufacturing, which will also be integrated with existing PLC devices and RF devices to automate its data collection processes.

Genetic Analysis Technology Company Goes Live with IFS Applications in Four Months

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. & CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IFS, the global enterprise applications company, announced today that Helicos BioSciences, of Cambridge, Mass., went live with IFS Applications in approximately four months.

Helicos BioSciences, a young company positioned for growth, is a life science company focused on innovative genetic analysis technologies for the research, drug discovery, and diagnostic markets. Helicos’ goal is to enable genetic analysis on an unprecedented scale by providing scientists and research/clinicians the ability to compare genes and genomes from thousands of individuals. This, in turn, will lead to the potential for improved drug therapies, personalized medicine and more accurate molecular diagnostics for diseases like cancer. Helicos’ product has the potential of having a high demand due to the faster results it provides. To ensure its business process could handle this resulting demand, its forward-thinking company leaders chose to implement IFS Applications.

“Our early commitment to an enterprise resource planning (ERP) application will help us plan for and respond to the dynamics of the life sciences marketplace,” Helicos BioSciences President and COO, Steve Lombardi said. “We feel strongly that IFS Applications was the correct ERP choice based on our needs to rapidly build our business processes. Keeping in mind that our technology is cutting edge, we also wanted an agile business system that would scale with our plans for growth.”

Assisting in Helicos’ IFS Application implementation was a consulting team from Corning Data Services, Inc. of Corning, N.Y.

“IFS Applications was by far the best solution for Helicos’ rapid installation requirement,” Corning Data Services, Inc. General Manager Michael Pauley said. “In order to keep pace with a fast growing company, Helicos sought out an enterprise application that would help them meet their changing needs and be quickly implemented. We are pleased to have provided a fast turnaround of our services to assist this fascinating company’s implementation of IFS Applications.”

“Helicos will continue to benefit from the agility of IFS Applications and its component-based service oriented architecture (SOA),” IFS North America President and CEO Cindy Jaudon said. “As Helicos experiences rapid growth, IFS Applications can be reconfigured and augmented to meet these needs with minimal business disruption. Our solution will grow and change with them as they encounter all the new challenges their early success will bring about.”

The life sciences industry is one of IFS’ targeted vertical markets. IFS Applications provides medical related companies a fully integrated, paperless system that enables a shorter time-to-market, faster payback on investments, and enhances customer loyalty while complying with complex government regulations. IFS Applications has proven its ability to help customers comply with FDA requirements and offers a Software Validation Package. IFS’ life sciences customers include Arrhythmia Research Technology, Inc., Camtronics Medical Systems, Bede Scientific, and KeyMed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Arrhythmia Research Technology goes live with IFS Applications

within four months

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. and FITCHBURG, Mass., October 25, 2007 – IFS, the global enterprise applications company, announced today that Arrhythmia Research Technology has successfully gone live with IFS Applications in only four months.

Almost exactly 120 days after signing a contract with IFS North America and Corning Data Services of Corning, N.Y., the medical device manufacturer has successfully implemented a full suite of IFS functionality including repetitive manufacturing, discrete manufacturing, engineer-to-order, distribution, demand planning, human resources, financial integration and shop floor reporting.

Rapid implementation was one reason Arrhythmia chose IFS Applications over competing products, as the company wanted to get up and running quickly to allow automated reporting required under Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and FDA regulations for medical device manufacturers.

“One reason for our ERP system search was to proactively meet new SOX reporting requirements that will be enforced January 1, 2008,” Arrhythmia IT Director Salvatore Emma said. “We were convinced that IFS Applications would be able to meet our diverse business needs and aggressive implementation timeline. At the same time, we needed to choose a vendor that could meet our budget requirements and help us to eliminate a variety of software systems we previously had in place. IFS Applications has proven agile enough to implement quickly, so we could be fully functional with the system an entire quarter before the reporting requirements deadline in January. The IFS Applications implementation has shown us that our systems will be able to support the growth and strategic goals of the organization in the future. Corning’s consultants and service level is among the best we have ever worked with, and this successful go-live couldn’t have been achieved without their in-depth business knowledge, the committed backing of our organization’s leadership and the hard work from a talented team of employees.”

“Implementing a top-tier enterprise application on a four-month timeline – even one as granular and flexible as IFS Applications – took close collaboration between Corning, IFS and the great team at Arrhythmia Research Technology,” Corning Data Services General Manager Michael Pauley said. “The fact that our consulting services team was based near the deployment helped, as did the rapport we were able to build with Arrhythmia.”

“Rapid implementation compared to other top-tier enterprise suites is one benefit customers can expect from IFS Applications,” IFS North America President and CEO Cindy Jaudon said. “But implementing the best-designed application in the world will take longer without quality people involved in the project, and much of the credit here must go to Corning and to Arrhythmia’s dedication.”

The high-tech industry is one of IFS’ targeted vertical markets. IFS offers industry-specific solutions for companies in the electronic equipment, electronic component and semiconductor industries. These solutions support all business processes, from design and mixed-mode manufacturing to after-sales support and warranty management. IFS’ high-tech customers include Rockwell Automation, NEC Philips Unified Solutions, NEC, SiRF, Maxon Motor, Kontron and Olympus Optical.

Corning Data celebrates 25th year
By Michael Mullaney

CORNING | Scott Peterson's first stint with computers was thirty years ago in Hammondsport.

Fresh out of college, the math major was working as a tour guide for Taylor Wine Co. on Keuka Lake. After the winery purchased its first IBM computer, Peterson gladly accepted an offer to become the resident "computer guy."

The old IBM "was about the size of a washer and dryer put together," Peterson said. His love and understanding of computers grew, as he used the machine to automate the winery's record books.
